The Benefits of Sunshine

At Moosehaven, we’re fortunate to live in a place where the sun shines bright – almost year-round. And while we all know the importance of sunscreen and shade, it’s also worth celebrating the good that sunshine can do for our bodies and minds, especially as we age.

Why Sunshine Matters

Spending time outdoors – even just a few minutes a day – can offer big benefits for seniors:

Boosts Vitamin D
Sunlight helps our bodies naturally produce vitamin D, which is essential for bone health, immune function, and muscle strength. As we age, we tend to produce less vitamin D from food alone, so a little sunshine can go a long way.

Elevates Your Mood
Natural light stimulates the production of serotonin – a feel-good hormone that helps improve mood and promote calmness. Regular time outdoors can help reduce feelings of depression, anxiety, and restlessness.

Regulates Sleep
Exposure to daylight helps regulate our body’s internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep at night and wake up feeling refreshed. Even a brief walk in the morning sun can support better sleep patterns.

      Enjoying the Outdoors at Moosehaven

Here on the beautiful banks of the St. Johns River, sunshine is never in short supply – and Moosehaven offers plenty of safe, serene ways to soak it in.

Residents love strolling along along the riverfront walking paths, relaxing in shaded gazebos, or joining friends for outdoor fitness classes and group activities. Many enjoy tending to flower beds and vegetable gardens or simply savoring a cup of coffee with a view.

And with features like plenty of benches, covered porches, and cool breezes off the water, it’s easy to enjoy the sunshine comfortably and safely. Moosehaven is currently working on a new project that will elevate some of the outdoor living for their seniors – check out the AAA project update to learn more.

      Staying Safe in the Sun

Of course, we believe in balance. Here are a few simple tips to enjoy the sun safely:

Time it right – Aim for early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak UV hours (10 am Time it right – Aim for early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak UV hours (10 am to 4 pm).to 4 pm).

Use sunscreen – Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ is best. Reapply as needed.

Stay hydrated – Bring a water bottle and sip regularly.

Dress smart – Light, breathable fabrics, sunglasses, and wide-brimmed hats offer added protection.

Know your limits – Take breaks in the shade, and don’t overdo it in the heat.

      Soak Up the Joy

At Moosehaven, we encourage residents to live fully and feel good – from the inside out. Whether it’s walking among the trees, chatting with friends by the rose garden, or enjoying a sunny lunch on the patio, we believe the simple act of being outside can brighten your day (literally and figuratively).

Sunshine, smiles, and serenity – it’s all part of the lifestyle at Moosehaven.
